Washington, D.C. (January 24, 2016) – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) today called on members of the Senate Finance Committee to confirm Congressman Tom Price, M.D. (R-GA), as Secretary of Health and Human Services.

“One of the highest priorities for small business owners is a better health insurance system that features lower costs and more flexibility,” said NFIB President and CEO Juanita Duggan. “Congressman Price, a physician and a strong advocate for small business, shares the same priorities and we urge bipartisan support for his confirmation.”

Price has been a strong advocate for repealing the Affordable Care Act, which is a key priority for small businesses. NFIB members strongly opposed the Affordable Care Act when it was proposed because of its heavy mandates, high taxes, and one-size-fits-all approach. The organization was the lead plaintiff in the Supreme Court case, NFIB vs Sebelius.

“Congressman Price views the health care issue from the perspective of a physician and as a policy maker,” said Duggan. “His experience as a physician, and as a legislator who has worked on this issue for many years, gives a strong foundation on which to build the reforms we need.”

In NFIB’s quadrennial Problems and Priorities survey, small business owners have identified the high cost of health insurance as their top challenge for the last 30 years.

The NFIB’s Small Business Optimism Index has risen sharply in recent months because small business owners anticipate a change in policy.
