NFIB Joins 16-group Coalition Against Statewide Paid Sick Leave

Date: October 31, 2018

On Oct. 22, the Alliance for the Securing and Strengthening the Economy in Texas (ASSET) announced their plans to legally challenge the paid sick leave ordinance in Austin and San Antonio with plans to push for broad statewide pre-emptions beyond paid sick leave, reports The Eagle.

Made up of 16 groupsincluding NFIB, the Texas Association of Business, the Texas Retailers Association, and the Texas Association of BuildersASSET’s top aim is “to protect Texas businesses from California-style public policies that interfere with the employee-employer relationship and the free market principles that have made Texas the best state in the nation to do business.”

“We’re just trying to codify the things that cities aren’t able to do based on the state constitution—it’s not been in state law before because this has never happened before,” NFIB Texas Director and ASSET Spokesman Annie Spilman said. “The cities have never attempted to do this before and it’s 2018…we need to be very proactive as we’re going into the legislative session.”
