NATIONAL SURVEY OF SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS MIRRORS DANGEROUS TREND CLOSE TO HOME

TRENTON (March 8, 2016): The National Federation of
Independent Business (NFIB) released new data this morning regarding the level
of optimism among small business owners nationwide. Unfortunately the downward
trend is indicative of issues that are mirrored in New Jersey.

“There is a direct correlation between policy initiatives
from lawmakers and the level of confidence employers feel regarding their long
term planning. It is not a coincidence that as the rhetoric around minimum wage
increases and mandatory paid leave are ramping up, small business owner
confidence is going down,” according to NFIB New Jersey state director, Laurie
Ehlbeck. “The level of uncertainty that exists at this point amongst our
members is overwhelming. It is impossible to plan on expanding a business by improving
capitol or hiring additional people when there is no way to gauge what mandates
will be impacting employers next.”

NFIB’s monthly Small Business Economic Trends survey is
based on a monthly survey of small businesses. The survey was conducted in
February and reflects the response of 756 small businesses. The Index of Small
Business Optimism fell 1 point in February to the lowest reading in two years,
with six of the 10 indices declining and four remaining unchanged.

“The political climate was once again the second most
frequently cited reason for reluctance to expand businesses amongst owners. If
only politicians would begin to take responsibility for the fact that their proposals
are hindering economic progress, maybe New Jersey would finally have a chance
for fiscal success,” concluded Ehlbeck.
