NFIB to Legislature: Don't Pass the Buck on Medicaid Expansion

Date: April 23, 2014

Dawn Starns, state director of NFIB/Louisiana, has released the following statement concerning legislation to put the question of Medicaid expansion on the November ballot:

“While we appreciate the idea of giving the people of Louisiana a chance to have a say in this, what SB 96 really does is pass the buck so our elected representatives won’t have to make a politically unpopular decision. The fact is that Louisiana simply can’t afford to expand Medicaid. We don’t believe Washington will continue to fund an expanded Medicaid indefinitely. When the federal money runs out, the burden will fall back on Louisianans in the form of higher taxes to cover the enormous bill.

“SB 96 is really more about public relations than it is policy. We’re asking legislators to do what we elected them to do and make the tough decisions and vote ‘no’ on Senate Bill 96.”

The National Federation of Independent is Louisiana’s and the nation’s leading small-business association. NFIB/Louisiana has over 4,000 dues-paying members representing a cross section of the state’s economy.
