SWEENEY AND PRIETO IN EPIC SHOWDOWN TO SEE WHO CAN DESTROY SMALL BUSINESS FASTER
TRENTON (May 14, 2016): Just days after learning that Senate leaders are proposing to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour over the course of the next several years, the small business community was shocked this morning to hear that the bad ideas don’t stop there. The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), who released a study on the harmful impact of Sweeney’s proposal last week, had the following to say about this morning’s news out of the Assembly:
“Speaker Prieto and Senate President Sweeney seem to be locking horns on all sorts of things these days. It’s really unfortunate that the backbone of our economy, the small business sector, is now caught in between these two horrendous proposals,” said NFIB New Jersey state director, Laurie Ehlbeck. “We released a study last week highlighting the devastating impact that Senator Sweeney’s minimum wage hike proposal would have on the employment sector in this country. It’s almost impossible to believe, but Speaker Prieto’s bill would be even more destructive given the immediate impact that $15 an hour minimum wage would have without a phase in.
Continued Ehlbeck, “We implore lawmakers in Trenton to carefully study our findings and put the good of the small business community and the taxpayers of New Jersey ahead of political expediency and campaign slogans. The small business community is doing everything they can to keep people employed in this difficult time. Unequivocally, they cannot afford to take this hit without dramatically reducing employment opportunities for people seeking work.”
