STATEMENT: Small Business Applauds Brownback for Vetoing Tax Increase

Date: February 21, 2017

Dan Murray, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, released the following statement tonight in response to Gov. Sam Brownback’s veto of HB2178, a plan to retroactively raise the state income taxes on small businesses:

“We want to thank Governor Brownback for standing by his promise to oppose a repeal of the small business income tax exemption. You can’t change the rules in the middle of the game. Small-business owners need predictability. They need to understand where they stand before they invest in growing their businesses. Raising taxes retroactively would undo all of their careful planning. It isn’t fair.

“We believe raising tax rates now would hurt small-business owners, their employees, and their families and help drive jobs out of Kansas. We believe the Legislature can learn a lesson from small businesses and live within its means. Small-business owners know you can’t spend money you don’t have. We want the Legislature to take another look at the budget and look for ways to save money and eliminate waste before even thinking of raising taxes.”
