CMS Still Has No Update On When Federal SHOP Exchange Will Open

Date: February 03, 2014

Small Business Owners Remain In The Dark

The
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on Thursday, January 30, 2014,
gave two updates on the Affordable Care Act’s Small Business Health Options
Program (SHOP) exchange. First, the agency said they were expecting only modest
enrollment on the exchange in 2014. Second, they told The Hill that though the
exchange was supposed to be functional by December, the agency still doesn’t
have a date for when it will be up and running.

What It Means Going Forward:

According
to The Hill, CMS insists “that since small businesses can still seek out
coverage through an agent or broker, the disruption would be small.”

The Hill “Healthwatch” blog chronicles the
situation and adds that “Republicans are getting antsy,” quoting Rep. Sam
Graves (R-MO) extensively about his concerns for the impact on small
businesses.
