NFIB/Maryland Member Profile: Debbie Houck, Owner, Exit Gold Realty

Date: October 13, 2015

Being in business for herself is all that Debbie Houck knows.

For many years, she owned and operated a large vending route in the Washington, D.C. area. She also owned her own school bus in Queen Anne’s County for several years. She next turned to the real estate industry, in which she has owned her own business for 12 years.

“Owning your own business is a new learning experience every day, and I hope that I look and listen to each experience, making me smarter and stronger,” she says.

As the real estate industry has gone through hard times in recent years, Houck relied on her years of experience and lessons learned to make it through.

“Our industry has just gone through the worst real estate market in decades,” she says. “We have struggled to keep our doors open and, as a single woman-owned business with no corporate or family money behind me, I am proud to say that we have survived and have been able to grow our business the last 8 months. We have moved to a nicer, larger location, upgraded our equipment and hired additional support staff.”

She also has a new business lesson under her belt as a result of the struggling real estate market.

“I think I tried to grow my business too fast when the market was strong,” she says. “[There was] money that I should have saved and would have made things a little easier during the rough times, however I have taken that as a lesson well learned and will think twice before doing it again.”

Houck is also glad for the support and benefits offered to small business through NFIB.

“NFIB is out there with a big voice for all of us, and it’s much appreciated,” she says.
