NFIB 2021 Virtual Fly-In: Rep. Jackie Walorski Meets with Indiana Small Business Owners

Date: June 30, 2021

U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski met with Indiana small business owners as part of NFIB’s virtual Fly-In. Ordinarily, NFIB members travel to Washington, D.C. each summer to meet with lawmakers and their staff on Capitol Hill to discuss issues that are most important to small businesses. This is NFIB’s second virtual fly-in due to the pandemic.

Rep. Walorksi called into the meeting after voting at the U.S. House of Representatives. “We are fighting every single day, in a minority position, with the trifecta of opposition power, trying to make sure that we knock down these bills and continue to educate Americans.”

NFIB members discussed a variety of issues facing small businesses, such as proposed tax increases, the possibility of repealing step-up in basis, the future of the small business deduction, and legislation like the harmful PRO Act.

NFIB member Randy Ballinger, owner of Walnut Creek & Club Run, a 36-hole golf course and driving range, shared his story on how repealing step-up in basis would be damaging to his business: “Repealing step-up in basis would be very detrimental to my business. I am nearing the age of retirement; we’ve got four generations of kids working in our business. I am nearing the age of retirement; we’ve got four generations of kids working in our business now and if they repeal step-up in basis, we don’t have a golf course anymore.”

Ballinger, along with other members, also expressed their concerns with possible changes to independent contractor rules. The PRO Act, if passed in the U.S. Senate, would include a stricter version of California’s “ABC” independent contractor laws that forced the state of California to immediately carve out dozens of exceptions.

“Rep. Walorski is a true friend of Indiana’s small business owners,” said NFIB Indiana State Director Barbara Quandt. “Our members here in Indiana are sure that Rep. Walorski will continue to be a fierce advocate for our struggling small business owners and continue to push back against bad small business policies in Washington D.C.”
