CDLE Director Joe Barela Meets with NFIB Members

Date: August 03, 2021

Agency leader of the Colorado Department of Labor & Employment answered important questions on the minds of small-business owners

Joe Barela, director of the Colorado Department of Labor & Employment (CDLE), and his top agency lieutenants answered many pressing questions on the minds of small-business owners July 26 in an exclusive video meeting for the membership of NFIB Colorado.

Joining Barela were Daniel Chase, chief of staff, Division of Unemployment; Scott Moss, director of Labor Standards, and Cher Haavind, chief communications officer for the CDLE.

“NFIB thanks Director Barela and his team for making the time to talk with our small-business-owning membership,” said Tony Gagliardi, Colorado state director for NFIB. “They understand the importance small business is to our state’s economic recovery and were able to clarify some of the confusion surrounding issues such as unemployment benefits, the condition of the state’s UI Trust Fund, and whether there will be a UI tax increase.”

Other topics brought up and discussed included paid family leave, equal pay, paid sick leave, and UI fraud. The issue of misclassification of employees was brought up by an NFIB member. The member stated there are still employers who are misclassifying employees as independent contractors, creating an unfair advantage over employers who are following the laws. Director Barela assured those on the call the issue will be examined.

One of the many benefits of NFIB membership is the opportunities it presents to hear directly from and talk directly to the top policymakers and agency officials making the decisions affecting your ability to own, operate, and grow your business.
