State of the State Left Much to be Desired for Small Business
Governor Jerry Brown’s state of the state address offered little to support small businesses

SACRAMENTO, Calif., January 24, 2017 – Following Governor Jerry Brown’s annual State of the State address, NFIB California State Executive Director Tom Scott issued the following statement on behalf of our 22,000 dues-paying small business members:

“Governor Jerry Brown’s glaring omission of small business or improving California’s business climate from his State of the State address cannot be ignored. With California being ranked the worst state to do business 12 years in a row, home to the nation’s highest income tax, sales tax, gas tax, and one of the most hostile legal climates, NFIB/CA was troubled to hear more about ‘the battle ahead’ with the federal government than supporting small business in this state.

“We certainly agree with the Governor’s comment that ‘California created almost 2.5 million jobs – and California has done this; [the state] didn’t. We hopefully didn’t cause too much interference.’ We know that the vast majority of jobs created in this state are from small businesses. Although the Governor’s State of the State address left much to be desired for small business, we hope to provide the insights of our 22,000 small business members to the Governor and Legislature in the year ahead.”
