2020 Challenges in the Washington State Legislature

Date: May 22, 2019

Another run at independent contractors, restrictive work schedules, and raid on payroll taxes expected

The 66th Washington State Legislature convened January 13, 2020, for the second half of its session

Post-Coronavirus Economic Recovery
NFIB submitted its small business economic recovery plan to Gov. Jay Inslee and legislative leaders in April 2020, anticipating a special session of the Legislature will be called later this year. NFIB will work to secure meaningful relief and assistance for small business owners while opposing any bills to increase taxes or regulations on our state’s job creators.

Independent Contractor Restrictions
NFIB will continue fighting to protect independent contractors from new laws and regulations essentially treating them as employees of their own customers or eliminating their use of shared spaces.

Restrictive Scheduling Requirements
NFIB will oppose legislation requiring employers to post schedules two weeks in advance or face financial penalties.
